In today’s dynamic world, where effective communication plays a pivotal role in all aspects of life, The DER Society (Debate, Eloquence & Rhetoric) stands out as an inspiring force in the realm of oratory arts, providing a space for learning, idea exchange, and honing oratory skills.
Noting that Tunisia teems with aspiring young orators all around the country, The DER Society’s aim is to rassemble them by comprising several DER clubs across different schools, fostering an environment of growth and development.
The DER Concept was launched on March 7, 2022 by Rania Ben Ayed who founded the first DER Club at the International School of Carthage.
There, members engage in public speaking activities and debates on a range of topics, from burning societal issues to profound philosophical debates.
As the DER Club ISC was rapidly evolving, she was later joined by Fares Ben Mohamed and Elyes Ben Ayed. Then was born an aspiration to nationalize the club’s reach, by establishing the DER Society and launching DER Clubs in other schools, making up for the first national Tunisian debating organization.
The foundation of The DER Society is rooted in the belief that cultivating eloquence and rhetoric in individuals prepares them to become confident and effective communicators, citizens and leaders.
The Association also strives to affirm Tunisia’s place on the international debate scene, and provide the country with hitherto lacking international opportunities. This mission was inaugurated by enrolling Tunisia among participating countries to the largest British Parliamentary debate competition: Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition. Each year, a number of selected students attend finals at the Oxford Union to represent Tunisia among some of the finest international debaters. In 2024, it is Rania Ben Ayed, Myriam Khouadja, Syrine Ati and Rafif Ouederni, four high school students that will represent Tunisia in the Oxford Union, at the University of Oxford.
